Cannabis and delayed effects
Cannabis can affect attention, coordination, and judgment. Edibles can take much longer to work than someone expects.
Understand the delay
With edible cannabis, effects may begin after 30 minutes to 2 hours and can take up to 4 hours to fully develop. Taking more before the full effects arrive can lead to an unpleasant or harmful experience.
Reduce avoidable risks
- If choosing to use, select lower-THC products and read the label carefully.
- Avoid combining cannabis with alcohol or other substances.
- Do not drive or operate machinery after using.
- Keep products in their original packaging, secured away from children and pets.
If someone feels unwell
Stop using and seek advice from a healthcare provider or local poison centre. Call emergency services for severe symptoms, difficulty breathing, a seizure, or inability to wake. Do not assume all symptoms are caused only by cannabis. A child’s possible exposure needs prompt poison-centre or medical advice.
Risks beyond feeling high
Cannabis can affect memory and mental health. Young people are more vulnerable to harms. Choosing not to use is an option at any age; if a medicine is prescribed, discuss changes with the prescriber.
If you are helping someone
Help keep cannabis products away from children and recognize when medical help is needed.
WARN (OTHERS)
After immediate care is covered, share dated advisories or observed concerns. Say what is confirmed and what is uncertain. Protect people’s privacy.
