When substance use may be becoming a problem

Look at the effect on your life, not only how often you use. You can ask for help before a crisis.

Patterns worth discussing

  • Using more or for longer than you intended.
  • Trying to cut down but finding it difficult.
  • Spending a lot of time using, obtaining substances, or recovering.
  • Strong cravings or feeling that use is taking over.
  • Continuing despite problems with health, relationships, work, or school.
  • Using in situations that put you or others at risk.

A checklist is not a diagnosis

One sign does not tell the whole story. A healthcare professional can assess the pattern and discuss support. Someone can appear to manage daily responsibilities and still need help.

Start with one honest question

“What is substance use helping me with, and what is it costing me?” Record examples without judging yourself. Bring them to a trusted professional. You do not need to choose a label for yourself to start a conversation.

If you are helping someone

Offer a calm conversation about specific changes you have noticed rather than diagnosing the person.

WARN (OTHERS)

After immediate care is covered, share dated advisories or observed concerns. Say what is confirmed and what is uncertain. Protect people’s privacy.

Emergency care comes first. Never share someone’s name, identifying photo or private health details.
