Unknown substances and drug checking

Appearance, taste, and a familiar seller cannot confirm what a substance contains or how strong it is.

Understand the uncertainty

Unregulated substances and counterfeit pills may contain unexpected ingredients, including fentanyl. Drug checking can provide useful information, but no result proves a substance is safe.

Use results carefully

  • Ask a local service what its test can and cannot detect.
  • Follow the instructions for the specific test.
  • A negative fentanyl test does not rule out every dangerous substance or all fentanyl-related compounds.
  • Do not assume a result from one sample represents a different batch.

Keep a wider safety plan

Avoid mixing substances, have naloxone accessible, and arrange for someone who can recognize an emergency and respond. Do not use alone. Where available, ask about supervised services. You can decide not to use after receiving a result, and you do not owe anyone an explanation.

If you are helping someone

A test result is not permission or a promise of safety. Support someone who decides not to use.

WARN (OTHERS)

After immediate care is covered, share dated advisories or observed concerns. Say what is confirmed and what is uncertain. Protect people’s privacy.

Emergency care comes first. Never share someone’s name, identifying photo or private health details.
